PR. No 262/2012 ECOBANK TRANSNATIONAL INCORPORATED (ETI)-APPOINTMENT OF DIRECTORS

ETI announces that the Board of Directors at its 153rd meeting held on 31st August, 2012 appointed the following new directors:
 
(i)                Dr. Dan Matjila as non-Executive Director;
 
(ii)              Mr. Thierry Tanoh, Group Chief Executive Director Designate, as Executive Director;
 
(iii)            Mr. Patrick Akinwuntan, Group Executive, Domestic Bank’ as Executive Director; and
 
(iv)            Mr. Eddy Ogbogu, Group Executive, Operations and Technology, as Executive Director.
 
Profiles:
 
Dr. Dan Matjila (1962) – Non-Executive Director
Dr. Daniel Matjila is an experienced finance & investments specialist, Investment risk management specialist, investment strategist and an academia. He has over 20 years in Senior Management role both in the private sector and academic sector. He also has over 15 years in investment management industry. He is current the Chief Investment Officer (CIO) and Executive Director for Public Investment Corporation (PIC). PIC is the largest asset manager in South Africa and the rest the African continent. He is managing a portfolio of investments in excess of R1.1 trillion Rands (approx. USD 150 billion) across all asset classes. He is also spearheading the offshore investment strategy and Africa investment strategy for the PIC.
 
Dr. Dan joined the PIC in 2003 as a Risk manager before being promoted to the position of the Chief Investment Officer and Executive Director in 2005. Dr. Dan is also a currently a Non-Executive director and board member for Afrisam Ltd, Entabeni holdings (chairman), and Harith Partners.
 
Prior joining the PIC, he was the Senior Manager Quantitative Research Analysis for Stanlib, where spearheaded the Applications of quantitative techniques in fund Management and manage Quant Portfolio for over two years. Prior Joining Stanlib, Dr Dan worked for Anglo American, a JSE listed company for five years. He was the Senior Manager: Quantitative Research Analysis, in his role, at Anglo American, he was responsible for Derivatives (Fixed Income, Equity and Currency) and Applications of quantitative techniques in fund Management.
 
Dr. Dan started his career as a Senior Mathematics lecturer at the University of the North and was in the academic field for over nine years. He Holds a Ph.D. (Wits),M.Sc. (Rhodes), B.Sc. hons (Fort Hare), B.Sc. (Fort Hare) among other qualifications. Dr. Dan is married with two children, boy 18 and girl 15 years old.
 
Thierry Tanoh (1962) – Group Chief Executive Officer Designate
 
Mr. Thierry Tanoh was appointed CEO Designate of the Ecobank Group at the end of 2011, as part of a succession plan put in place as a result of the impending retirement of Ecobank’s incumbent CEO, Mr. Arnold Ekpe, at the end of 2012. Mr. Tanoh commenced his executive role with Ecobank in July and is currently working closely with Mr. Ekpe to ensure the smooth transition of leadership responsibilities.
 
Mr. Tanoh joins Ecobank Group from the IFC, a member of the World Bank Group and a global financial institution that supports private sector development in developing countries. During his 17-year career with the IFC, Mr. Tanoh has played a key role in expanding the latter’s investment activity in Sub-Saharan Africa from USD 140 million in 2003 to more than to $3.5 billion in 2011. During this time, his responsibilities included business development, deal structuring and processing of some of IFC’s largest transactions, before taking on a broader management role.
 
Mr. Tanoh joined IFC in 1994 through the young professional program. He initially worked in the Asia Department. He then specialized in the chemicals and petrochemicals sector, working on transactions in Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe. He moved to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2001, focusing on transactions in Latin America. He became Regional Director in 2006 and Vice President, Latin America & the Caribbean, Sub-Saharan Africa and Western Europe in 2008.
 
Prior to joining IFC, Mr. Tanoh worked for a consulting firm in Paris and with the banking commission of the West African Central Bank in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire. An Ivorian national, he graduated from Ecole Superieure de Commerce d’Abidjan, is a certified public accountant in France and holds a Masters in Business Administration from the Harvard Business School.
 
 
Eddy Ogbogu (1961) –   Group Executive, Operations and Technology
Since August 2010, Eddy Ogbogu is the Group Executive responsible for Operations and Technology in Ecobank Group. He is also the managing Director of eProcess International SA, a wholly owns subsidiary of ETI responsible for Operations and Technology shared services for the Group. A seasoned Operations professional, Eddy has worked in senior Banking Operations and Technology management role for more than a decade in different organizations covering multiple geographies in Africa. Before his current appointment, he had a short stint in Bank PHB Plc in Nigeria where he was an Executive Director, heading the Service Bank of the organization, with responsibility for Operations and Technology, including administrative services.
 
Prior to this, Eddy had 19 years illustrious career at Citibank in different African countries. He was appointed the Senior Country Operations Officer for the Citibank franchise in Nigeria in 2005 after similar role in Tanzania, Zambia and Kenya and also served as a Director in its Board of Directors. Eddy was also given the responsibility of overseeing the Citibank Operations and Technology in the West Africa cluster.
Eddy has played leadership roles in areas such as Continuity of Business Program, Business Risk and Compliance Committee, Quality Service Initiatives, Process automation projects, ISO certifications, Team building workshops, Systems and Data Center migrations, Audit & Risk reviews and premises projects. He has served in several management and strategic committees.
 
Eddy is a graduate of Accountancy and holds a professional qualification of ACA in this area. He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN); Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM), Honorary Fellow of the Nigeria Institute of Bankers (NIB) and charitable societies.
 
Patrick Akinwuntan (1962)  – Group Executive – Domestic Bank, Executive Director
Patrick Akinwuntan leads the Domestic bank which is responsible for the retail, local corporate, public sector and microfinance businesses of the Group. Prior to his current responsibility, he has held various group responsibilities which include Group Head, Domestic Bank Products, Group Head Operations, Technology, Transaction and Retail bank and Managing Director of eProcess International where he led the setup of the Ecobank Pan African Technology and Shared Services centre in Accra, Ghana. He was Executive Director, Retail Banking at Ecobank Nigeria between 2001 and 2005 and Group Chief Financial Officer between 1999 and 2001. Patrick has also been Group coordinator, Commercial banking and Zonal Head. Western II at Ecobank Nigeria between 1996 and 1999. Before Ecobank, he worked for Ernst and Young, Manufacturers Merchant Bank and Springfountain Management Consultants in Nigeria.
 
Patrick’s passion is to take banking to the people by making financial services available to the banked, under-banked and unbanked in Africa through innovative platforms such as Ecobank Microfinance, Ecobank Rapid Transfer, Ecobank Regional Cards, Ecobank Diaspora Account and Ecobank Mobile.
 
Patrick holds an MBA (Finance Option) from the Obafemi Awolowo University – Ile Ife, Nigeria. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria. He is also an alumnus of the Harvard Business School’s Senior Executive Program.
 
He is a member of the Group Executive Committee.
